How long does it take to build an online store?

An online store is more than a website with a shopping cart: product data, payment methods, shipping and legal obligations all have to fit together. Here you can see which steps take how much time and what you can prepare in advance.

Short & clear

How long it takes to build an online store depends mainly on the size of your product range, the e-commerce platform, integrations and the condition of your product data. A lean store with a manageable product range and standard processes can often launch in a few weeks, while stores with an inventory management system connection, B2B pricing or many variants take more like a few months. Before an online store is truly up and running, legal texts, payment providers, shipping and test orders also need to be in place.

What determines how long an online store takes?

The biggest time factor is the product range. Twenty products without variants are entered in no time, while a thousand items with sizes, colors and tiered pricing need a clean data import and a well-thought-out category structure. On top of that come product photos and descriptions that are meant to sell – not just manufacturer texts that appear word for word in many other stores.

The second factor is integrations. If the store is to pull stock levels from an inventory management system, pass orders to an ERP or send invoice data to accounting automatically, these connections have to be planned, developed and tested with real data. The more systems are involved, the more important it is that everyone involved is properly aligned before development starts.

Shopify, WooCommerce or Shopware: which is faster to set up?

Shopify is a hosted service: servers, updates and payment processing are largely preconfigured, which favors a quick start. WooCommerce extends a WordPress website and makes sense if you already have a WordPress site. Shopware is strong in the B2B space and with more complex pricing and role models, but it usually needs more setup time and technical know-how.

Faster is not automatically better, though. What matters is which system fits your product range, your processes and your growth plans. Switching e-commerce platforms after two years costs more time than a thorough decision at the beginning. You will find the differences explained in detail in our comparison of the e-commerce platforms Shopware, WooCommerce and Shopify.

The steps to launching the store

An online store comes together in clear stages: concept and choice of e-commerce platform, design of the home, category and product pages, setting up payment methods and shipping rules, importing the product data, integrating the legal texts and finally test orders with all payment methods. Only when an order runs from the shopping cart to the confirmation email without errors is the store ready for real customers.

The lead times of external parties are often underestimated. Payment providers review your company before activating you, shipping providers need contracts, and special rules apply to some product groups. Start these registrations in parallel with store development – not only once the design is finished and everyone is already waiting for the launch date. If you want to ship to other EU countries, you should also clarify VAT questions with your tax advisor early.

  • Concept, product range structure and e-commerce platform
  • Design of home, category and product pages
  • Set up payment methods, shipping and tax rates
  • Import and check product data
  • Integrate legal texts and test the ordering process
  • Launch with Search Console and success tracking

Business registration, tax office, packaging register: what to take care of before launch

Anyone in Germany who regularly sells goods with the intention of making a profit is generally running a business and must register it with the responsible trade office (Gewerbeamt). This also applies if the sales take place exclusively online. There are exceptions, for example for the liberal professions or the occasional sale of private items – but the distinction is not always easy in an individual case.

Plan early for business registration, tax registration with the tax office (Finanzamt) and – if you ship packaged goods to private customers – registration in the LUCID packaging register. These steps run independently of the technology and can delay the launch if tackled too late. This section gives a general overview and does not replace legal or tax advice.

How do I create terms and conditions for an online store – and when?

In Germany, terms and conditions (AGB) are not legally mandatory, but in practice they make sense for almost every store: they govern, for example, formation of the contract, delivery, payment and retention of title. Other mandatory information, by contrast, is indispensable, such as a complete legal notice (Impressum), a privacy policy, for sales to consumers the withdrawal notice with a model withdrawal form, as well as correct total prices and information on shipping costs. At the latest at the start of the ordering process, delivery restrictions and accepted payment methods must also be clearly visible.

Do not copy terms and conditions from other stores – other people's texts rarely fit your processes and may be protected by copyright. It is usual to use legal texts from specialist attorneys or specialized legal-text services that are updated when laws change. We integrate these texts cleanly into the store and ordering process, including a clearly labeled order button. This section does not replace legal advice.

What does an online store cost per month – and why does it belong in the schedule?

Besides the build itself, there are ongoing costs: hosting or a platform subscription, payment provider fees per transaction, paid apps or plugins, legal-text subscriptions, maintenance and marketing. Which items apply to you depends heavily on the e-commerce platform – with hosted services such as Shopify, some services are included in the subscription, whereas with WooCommerce or Shopware you bear hosting and updates yourself.

These items matter for the schedule because many contracts have to be signed before launch. Review terms, notice periods and fee models calmly instead of signing under time pressure shortly before the start. You will find a detailed overview of the individual cost blocks in our guide “How much does an online store cost?” That way it stays clear after launch which costs arise every month.

What matters

These factors determine the duration

Size and condition of the product range

Clean, complete product data can be imported quickly – incomplete data has to be prepared first.

Variants and pricing logic

Sizes, colors, tiered prices or customer-group prices increase the effort for setup and testing.

Interfaces to inventory management and ERP

Every system connection needs coordination, development and testing with real data.

Choice of e-commerce platform

Hosted solutions often start faster; flexible systems need more setup but offer more room to maneuver.

Payment providers and shipping

Activations and contracts with external providers have their own lead times.

Legal preparation

Legal texts, business registration and, where applicable, packaging registration should run in parallel with the technical work.

Custom store design

A custom design needs more coordination than an adapted standard theme.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

A lean store with well-maintained product data can often launch in a few weeks. With many variants, ERP integration or B2B features, you should expect more like a few months. Until orders come in regularly, you also need marketing and time to become findable on Google.

Typical items are hosting or a subscription, transaction fees, apps or plugins, legal texts, maintenance and marketing. Quoting flat market prices would be unreliable because the models differ greatly. For the build, our packages offer guidance – Starter from €2,500, Professional from €8,000, Enterprise priced individually; the exact quote follows after the free initial consultation.

In Germany, anyone who sells regularly with the intention of making a profit is generally running a business, which has to be registered when the activity begins – so by the time the store launches at the latest. Plan the registration and tax registration in parallel with store development. Clarify your case with the trade office or your tax advisor; this note does not replace legal advice.

As early as possible, so the texts do not become a bottleneck shortly before launch. It is usual to use legal texts from specialist attorneys or specialized services with an update service; texts copied from other stores usually do not fit and can lead to cease-and-desist letters (Abmahnungen) in Germany. We integrate the texts correctly into the store and ordering process.

Hosted systems such as Shopify are often ready to go quickly because you do not have to handle hosting and updates yourself. WooCommerce is implemented quickly if a WordPress website already exists. Shopware usually needs more setup but plays to its strengths with complex B2B requirements.

Yes, and that is often the smarter path. A small start shows early which products, payment methods and marketing channels work. The only important thing is that the e-commerce platform and category structure are designed for growth from the beginning.
