What is a meta description?

In brief

A meta description is an HTML element in the head of a page that summarizes its content in one or two sentences. Search engines may display the text as the description below the page title in search results. It is not a direct ranking factor.

Meta description: definition and meaning

The meta description sits in the head of a page as a meta element named description, with the description text in the content attribute. It summarizes the content and serves as a suggested text for the snippet, the text excerpt below the page title and address in search results. For visitors, it is the teaser that helps decide whether they click.

Google has stated several times that the meta description is not a ranking factor. Its effect is indirect: a clear, fitting text can raise the click-through rate. At the same time, Google itself decides whether to show the stored text or an excerpt from the page, depending on the search query.

How to write a good meta description

There is no fixed length limit, because what is displayed is whatever fits the available width, which is less on a smartphone than on a desktop. As a rule of thumb, around 120 to 160 characters work, with the core message at the beginning. Every page needs its own description, because duplicate texts achieve little.

  • Name the main term and a concrete benefit early
  • Match the search intent: answer, offer, or solution
  • End with a short call to action
  • No stringing together of search terms
  • Write a unique text for every page

Real-world example: a physiotherapy practice

A physiotherapy practice has stored the same default text for all twelve of its service pages, so in search results every hit looks the same. After a rewrite, each page names the treatment, the location, and a benefit, for example: “Physical therapy in Speyer: treatment for back pain, short-notice appointments. Inquire now.”

The click-through rate can be tracked per page in Google Search Console. This shows which wording works and where improvements are needed. It is important not to rewrite all pages at once but to proceed in stages, so you can see the effect of individual changes.

Limits and common mistakes

Google often rewrites snippets when a different excerpt fits the search query better. That is normal and not a mistake. For AI summaries, the content on the page itself is what matters most, not the meta element. A good description is still worthwhile because it is displayed for many search queries.

Common mistakes are empty fields, texts generated automatically by plugins, copied descriptions, and promises the page does not keep. The latter raises the bounce rate and damages trust in your brand. Stringing together search terms also looks untrustworthy and is rarely clicked.

Implementation in the CMS

In WordPress, Shopware, or Shopify, the meta description can be maintained per page. For large online stores, templates with placeholders such as product name and category help, and important pages are overwritten by hand. Nano Concepts sets up the fields in the CMS and, on request, writes the texts for your most important pages.

Frequently asked questions about Meta description

Around 120 to 160 characters is a good guideline. Google truncates texts that are too long; there is no fixed limit because the display width varies. Put the most important statement at the beginning.

No, Google does not use it for ranking. It does influence indirectly whether users click your result, and therefore how well your listings perform in search results. A convincing text is still worth the effort.

Google chooses the text depending on the search query. If a section of the page fits the question better than your meta description, Google shows that instead. A precise description and well-structured content increase the chance that your text is used.
