What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?

In brief

GEO (generative engine optimization) refers to measures that get content and brands mentioned and linked as a source in the answers of generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews. It complements classic search engine optimization.

GEO: definition and meaning

More and more people put questions directly to AI assistants or read AI summaries in search instead of comparing several links. GEO aims to appear in such generated answers—as a named brand, a cited source, or a recommended provider. For SMEs, this matters most for services that need explaining, where decision-makers get a first overview from an AI beforehand.

The term became known in 2023 through a research paper on “generative engine optimization.” Related terms include AEO (answer engine optimization) and LLMO. None of them is defined uniformly; each refers to being found in AI-powered answer systems, whether as a chatbot, an AI search, or a summary within a classic search engine.

How GEO works

Many AI systems combine a language model with a web search. They retrieve suitable pages, take individual passages, and compose an answer from them, often with source references. To be cited, you must first be found, retrieved, and understood. What counts above all is whether a passage answers a question on its own. In practice, these things help:

  • Clear definitions and direct answers right at the start of a section
  • Verifiable facts with a source, a date, and a named author
  • Unambiguous company information: services, location, contact
  • Structured data and a clean page structure
  • Mentions on other trustworthy websites and in industry directories
  • Not accidentally blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt

Real-world example: a manufacturer’s expertise

A manufacturer of industrial filters offers data sheets as PDFs and short product texts. For questions such as “Which filter suits hydraulic oil?”, an AI assistant answers with information from other sites. If the manufacturer adds understandable guide pages with selection criteria, tables, and a clear description of its services, the chance of being used as a source increases. Whether that works can only be checked in spot tests, for example by regularly asking important questions in different AI systems.

Opportunities, limitations, and common mistakes

GEO reaches people early in their research and can strengthen brand awareness. There is no guarantee: AI answers vary by question, model, and time, and providers do not disclose the rules by which they select sources. In addition, part of AI usage ends without a click on the source, so a brand mention can be more valuable than the direct visit. Much of what GEO recommends also overlaps with solid SEO.

  • Promises such as “guaranteed mention in ChatGPT”
  • Mass-produced AI-generated text without expert review
  • Content that is only loaded via JavaScript or sits behind pop-ups
  • No monitoring of what AI systems say about your brand

What companies should look out for

Start with an inventory: what do AI systems currently answer to questions about your industry and your company, and is the information correct? Next come content with precise answers, clean technical foundations, and consistent company data. Google stresses that no special extra optimization is needed to appear in its AI features; the familiar fundamentals of good search engine optimization apply. Nano Concepts supports you with GEO analysis, structured data, and editorially prepared expert content.

Frequently asked questions about GEO (generative engine optimization)

SEO aims for good positions in the results list of classic search. GEO aims to be mentioned or cited in generated AI answers. Both build on the same foundations: helpful content, clean technology, and trust.

No. Which sources an AI system names depends on the model, the question, and the time, and cannot be controlled from outside. You can improve your chances by providing clear, well-sourced content and staying accessible to crawlers.

Not as things stand. Google representatives have said they know of no AI system that evaluates llms.txt. Accessible, well-structured content matters more. You will find more in the llms.txt entry.

Reliable measurement is difficult. Common approaches are regular spot checks with fixed questions, analyzing traffic from AI systems in web analytics, and observing whether the brand is named correctly in answers.
