What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews (in Germany also called “KI-Übersichten” or “Übersicht mit KI”) are AI-generated summaries from Google shown above the classic search results. They answer questions in a few sentences and link to the sources used. In Germany they have been available since March 2025.

AI Overviews: definition and meaning
For many questions, Google displays a box above the results that summarizes the answer. It is generated with the Gemini language model, draws on content from Google Search, and shows links to the sources. AI Overviews launched in the US in May 2024 and in Germany at the end of March 2025. There is also “AI Mode,” a chat-like search that has been available in Germany since October 2025.
For companies, this changes search: for simple factual questions, the summary is enough for some users, so a click on the website is no longer necessary. At the same time, an opportunity opens up: if you are linked as a source, you appear prominently at the top of the results page.
How AI Overviews are created
Google selects sources that fit the question and combines them into an answer. A page can only be linked if it is in the index and may be shown with a text excerpt (snippet). According to Google, no special markup or files are needed. In practice, these things help:
- Clear, direct answers to concrete questions
- Factually correct, current, and well-sourced content
- Technically sound pages: indexable, fast, mobile-friendly
- Unambiguous information about the company and the authors
- Structured data that matches the visible content
Real-world example: a landscaping company’s guide
A landscaping company runs a guide on the question “When should you dethatch your lawn?” An AI Overview now appears for this question, and the guide’s click numbers fall. The company expands the article with concrete time windows depending on the weather, its own photos, and information on how to commission the work.
That way the article still has a chance of being linked as a source and leads readers who want more than a short answer to the service page. In addition, the company links from the guide to its service pages so that interested readers can find the next step right away.
Opportunities, limitations, and common mistakes
AI Overviews can bring reach if a page is linked as a source, and they raise the value of clear expert content. At the same time, they lead to more searches without a click for simple informational questions. The answers are also not free of errors: AI summaries can shorten facts or present them incorrectly. Typical mistakes:
- Watching only ranking positions and not checking click declines on information pages
- Generic texts with no value of their own that can be summarized at will
- Outdated or contradictory information across several pages
- Snippet settings such as nosnippet accidentally active
What companies should look out for
Check for which of your search terms AI Overviews appear, and evaluate impressions and clicks in Search Console; since June 2026, Google has been gradually rolling out dedicated reports on impressions in generative AI features. Focus on content that offers more than a short answer: experience, figures, examples, advice. Nano Concepts analyzes visibility and revises content accordingly.
Frequently asked questions about AI Overviews

No. Google selects sources automatically. A page must be indexed and allow text excerpts. According to Google, no special markup is required. Helpful, correct, and well-structured content improves your chances but guarantees nothing.
For simple informational questions, clicks can decline because the answer already appears in the overview. How much depends on the topic and the search term. Blanket figures should be read with caution; check your own data in Search Console.
No. AI Overviews appear as a summary on the normal results page. AI Mode is a separate, chat-like search area in which users ask follow-up questions. Both draw on Google Search content and link to sources.
