Database optimization: find slow queries and speed them up

When pages, reports or exports take longer and longer to load, the cause is often the database. We measure where the time is lost and optimize queries, indexes and configuration – with before-and-after figures instead of gut feeling.

Short & clear

Database optimization is the targeted improvement of a database's performance by analyzing slow queries, adding the right indexes, tuning the configuration to your hardware and load and, where necessary, changing the data model or the application. Nano Concepts optimizes MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL and SQL Server databases in three steps: measure, make targeted changes, prove the effect. Depending on scope, an analysis with an action plan and first optimizations falls under the Starter package from €2,500, more extensive rebuilds under the Professional package from €8,000 – the exact quote follows after the free initial consultation.

Database optimization with Nano Concepts

Database optimization starts with a simple question: where exactly is the time being lost? Before we change anything, we measure. For MySQL and MariaDB we analyze the slow query log, for PostgreSQL the statistics from pg_stat_statements, for SQL Server the Query Store. That shows us which queries run most often, which take the longest and which put the most strain on the server. Often a handful of queries cause most of the load – and that is exactly where database performance optimization starts, instead of simply buying more hardware.

01

The typical causes are similar everywhere: missing or badly composed indexes, queries that scan entire tables, and the N+1 problem, where an application fires off another query for every row of a list. Add to that settings that were never adapted to the server, bloated tables full of old data, or locks that block each other when many users access the system at once. Using execution plans from EXPLAIN, we examine every critical query individually and decide whether an index, a rewritten query or a change in the application code is the better solution.

02

Because we develop software ourselves, we don't stop at the database boundary. Many bottlenecks originate in the application – for example in ORM queries in Laravel or Doctrine that load more data than necessary. Where it makes sense, we add caching with Redis, a connection pooler or a read replica for reporting. We test every change first on a copy with realistic data, roll it out in an agreed time window and document the measurements before and after the optimization. On request, we set up permanent monitoring so that new bottlenecks are spotted early.

Typical signs that Database optimization is worth it

  • Pages or reports that used to load instantly now take several seconds or time out.
  • The database server runs under constant high load even though hardly any more users have been added.
  • Exports, imports or reports can only run at night because they slow everything else down during the day.
  • Timeouts, locks or deadlocks occur as soon as many users work at the same time.
  • The only solution suggested is an ever-bigger server, without anyone knowing the cause.
Scope of services

What we deliver for you

Find slow queries, optimize indexes and configuration, measure the effect – for MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQL Server.

Performance analysis

Evaluation of the slow query log, pg_stat_statements or Query Store, server load and wait times – with a ranking of the most expensive queries.

Index optimization

Add missing indexes, remove redundant ones and align composite indexes with the queries that actually run.

Query optimization

Rewrite slow SQL queries and ORM calls, fix N+1 problems and avoid unnecessarily large result sets.

Configuration tuning

Set memory, connections, caches and maintenance jobs such as autovacuum to match your hardware and load.

Data model & archiving

Review the table structure, archive old data and partition large tables where needed, so the system grows with your data.

Monitoring & report

Documented before-and-after measurements and, on request, a dashboard that keeps an eye on response times and load permanently.

Your benefits

Why companies choose us

Faster applications

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Database optimization

The cost depends on the size and number of databases, the application behind them and the scope of the changes required. Depending on scope, an analysis with an action plan and first optimizations is possible in the Starter package from €2,500, while more extensive changes to the data model and application tend to fall under the Professional package from €8,000. You will receive the exact quote after the free initial consultation.

The most effective approach is to measure first which queries consume the most time. After that, suitable indexes, rewritten queries and a configuration adapted to the hardware often help. Only once these options are exhausted do caching, read replicas or bigger servers make sense.

An analysis with first results is often possible within a few days to a few weeks, depending on how long we need to observe normal operation. We plan larger changes to the data model or the application in stages. After the analysis, we give you a realistic schedule.

We work with MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server, and with Redis as a cache. Whether the database runs on your own server, with a hosting provider or as a managed cloud service makes little difference to the analysis. What matters is an access that lets us evaluate statistics and execution plans.

Sometimes in the short term, but it usually just postpones the problem. A query without a suitable index keeps getting slower as the data grows, no matter how powerful the server is. We show you which measure has the biggest effect on your database – sometimes that really is more memory.

We start with read-only measurements and test every change on a copy with realistic data. On large tables we create indexes in a way that avoids blocking operations wherever possible, and we deploy changes in agreed time windows with a backup. That keeps every step reversible.
