Headless WordPress: familiar editing, a modern website with Next.js

With headless WordPress, WordPress serves only as the backend for content management. The content is retrieved through the REST API or WPGraphQL and delivered as a website by a separate frontend, for example with Next.js. Editing stays familiar, and the presentation becomes independent of the theme.

A compact company website with few content types can start in the Starter package from €2,500. Projects with many content types, multilingual content or a store integration usually fall under the Professional package from €8,000, and we price large portals individually as Enterprise. Next.js retrieves the content from WordPress through the API and turns it into pages that are built in advance or rendered on the server. When editors save a change, a webhook ensures that only the affected pages are regenerated. A preview function shows drafts in the real design before publication.

Plugins that work in the backend – for example for fields, translations or SEO data – can usually still be used if they provide their data through the API. Page builders and plugins that output content directly in the theme, on the other hand, do not work and are replaced by frontend components. Editing and frontend run separately: WordPress on a conventional server, in German data centers on request, and the frontend on a platform such as Vercel or on a dedicated Node.js server. We recommend the combination based on your requirements for data protection, costs and operations, and document which service processes which data.
