Short & clear

Software modernization means technically renewing an existing application – for example, bringing outdated PHP, database or desktop software onto current, secure and maintainable technology without losing the business logic that has grown over the years. Nano Concepts starts with a code and system analysis, secures ongoing operations and then migrates module by module. We usually implement modernizations of individual applications in the Professional package from €8,000; large legacy migrations are quoted individually in the Enterprise package after the free initial consultation.

Software modernization with Nano Concepts

Software modernization is called for when an application still does its job reliably but has aged technically: outdated PHP versions, an Access or desktop solution that only runs on certain computers, or a system whose original developer is no longer available. In legacy software modernization, we preserve the business logic that has grown over the years and renew the foundation beneath it. Your team then works with the same rules, but on technology that is secure, extensible and easy to maintain again.

01

A complete replacement overnight is rarely the best idea. We begin with an honest assessment: How is the code structured, which data and interfaces depend on it, where are the security gaps? Then we decide together whether refactoring, a gradual replacement of individual modules or a rebuild is worthwhile. We often replace the legacy system piece by piece – old and new parts run in parallel for a while until the last function has been moved and the legacy system can be switched off.

02

Until the modernization is complete, the legacy system has to keep running. That is why, on request, we also provide legacy software support: bug fixes, security updates, backups and monitoring for the existing application – even if another provider developed it. This buys you time for a carefully planned migration instead of having to act under pressure. In the end, you have a documented codebase, automated tests and a modern infrastructure that no longer depends on the knowledge of a single person.

Scope of services

What we deliver for you

Take over, secure and gradually migrate legacy systems to modern technology – without business interruption or data loss.

Code & system analysis

We review architecture, dependencies, database and security status and present the risks and options in a clear report.

Takeover & stabilization

We take over source code and servers, set up version control and backups, and fix acute errors.

Refactoring & tests

Critical parts of the program are cleaned up and protected with automated tests before we change them.

Step-by-step migration

Modules move to modern technology one after the other – for example, from an old PHP version to current Laravel, or from a desktop program to a web application.

Data migration

Legacy data is cleaned up, transferred into the new structure and spot-checked against the legacy system.

Documentation & handover

You receive up-to-date technical documentation so that the knowledge about your software no longer depends on a single person.

Your benefits

Why companies choose us

Business logic is preserved

Rules and special cases that have grown over the years are not lost; they are carried over into the new technology.

Lower security risk

Current runtime environments, frameworks and libraries receive regular security updates again.

Operations keep running

Thanks to the gradual replacement, your team keeps working without downtime throughout the modernization.

Extensible again

After the modernization, new features, interfaces and mobile access are possible again with reasonable effort.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Software modernization

The cost depends mainly on the condition and scope of the legacy system. We usually implement modernizations of individual applications or modules in the Professional package from €8,000, and we quote extensive legacy migrations individually in the Enterprise package. You receive a reliable quote after the free initial consultation and the assessment.

The duration depends on how many modules, data sets and interfaces are being moved. Because we work in stages, you often benefit after the first migrated module, while the rest follows on a predictable schedule. We prepare a timeline after the assessment.

If the business logic is right and the code is fundamentally well structured, modernization is usually more cost-effective. If the architecture is no longer viable, a rebuild can be cheaper – and even then we carry over the existing rules and data. After the analysis, we tell you openly which route is worthwhile.

Yes. We take over bug fixes, security updates, backups and monitoring for existing applications – even if another provider developed them. That keeps your operations stable until the modernization is complete.

Our goal is a complete transfer. We back up the legacy system beforehand, transfer the data in test runs first and compare samples with the original. The switchover happens only after you have reviewed the results.

Missing documentation is more the rule than the exception with legacy systems. We reconstruct the structure and workflows from the code, the database and conversations with your users. If even the source code is missing, we assess together which options are technically possible – please clarify questions about rights to the code separately. This does not replace legal advice.
