Flensburg is an independent city at the inner end of the fjord, right on the border with Denmark, and with more than 90,000 residents the center of northern Schleswig-Holstein. As the seat of the Federal Motor Transport Authority, Europa-Universität Flensburg, Flensburg University of Applied Sciences and the Mürwik Naval Academy, the city has strong public-sector and education locations. Added to these are the Flensburger Brauerei, shipbuilding and vehicle technology, lively retail with cross-border customers, and the Diako hospitals and the Malteser Krankenhaus St. Franziskus-Hospital. The A 7, the port and the railway link the city with Hamburg and Denmark; its rum tradition and the Nordertor gate recall its trading history.
