Tourism is the dominant economic sector: since 2002 the old town has been part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Wismar, and the Meeresmuseum and Ozeaneum draw visitors. Major employers include the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund, the Helios clinics and the municipal utility, alongside shipbuilding and mechanical engineering companies. The seaport mainly handles bulk goods, while Hochschule Stralsund trains around 2,500 students in electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering and business.
