Bocholt is regarded as an industrial and shopping city: metal and electrical industries dominate the economy, while textiles have lost much of their importance since World War II. The largest employer is the gearbox manufacturer Flender, joined by Gigaset, Autoneum, Duvenbeck and Rose Bikes, among others. At 300 hectares, the industrial park in the southwest is considered the largest contiguous, fully developed commercial area in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Westfälische Hochschule and a study center of the Fachhochschule des Mittelstands train skilled workers, and the border with the Netherlands lies directly north of the city.
