As the regional center (Oberzentrum) of Eastern Thuringia, Gera has a strong service sector that employs more than 80 percent of the workforce, complemented by mechanical engineering, optics, measurement and medical technology, metal products and food production. Employers include Electronicon Kondensatoren, POG Präzisionsoptik, a Kaeser compressor plant, the Lidl central warehouse for Thuringia and Saxony, and the SRH Waldklinikum. With the Duale Hochschule Gera-Eisenach and the SRH Hochschule für Gesundheit, Gera is a university city; the A4 north of town and the main station as a rail junction provide the connections.
