Coal and steel shaped Hattingen for a long time: the Henrichshütte was the main employer for more than 100 years and at times employed around 10,000 people; a commercial and landscape park with the LWL Industrial Museum emerged on its grounds. Today retail, skilled trades, services, local recreation and tourism come first – with nearly 150 medieval half-timbered houses in the old town, Blankenstein Castle and Lake Kemnade. The S 3 runs to Oberhausen, tram line 308 to Bochum, and the DGB education center on the Homberg draws seminar guests.
