Nordhorn was long a textile town: around 1960, some 12,000 people worked in the industry, 6,000 of them at NINO. Between 1979 and 2001, the three big factories ceased production; structural change brought new uses such as the Kompetenzzentrum Wirtschaft in the NINO high-rise and the Alte Weberei as a culture and tourism center. According to the IHK data profile, a good half of employees work in other services, about a quarter in trade, transport and hospitality, and around a fifth in manufacturing. As the district seat of Grafschaft Bentheim, Nordhorn borders the Netherlands.

Where looms once clattered, there are now a competence center, the Alte Weberei and a zoo with hundreds of thousands of visitors – Nordhorn has learned to embrace change and has long taken the border with the Netherlands into account.
